There are many different ways to be more active, from going for a brisk walk along the sea front or in the countryside, to paddle boarding on a lake or down a river. Start with short bursts of daily exercise and build up your activity gradually. Gym classes are great fun and there is a wide range of classes to choose from. Zumba, boxercise, step, yogalates, HIIT, body pump… Some gyms allow you to pay as you go for classes till you decide to join.

Joining a gym can be a great option if you are committed to going on a regular basis. Look at the minimum subscription time and cancellation policies carefully before joining. Choose a gym near to you with a good selection of gym equipment to use and a range of classes so you can try out different machines and classes. It is also a great way to make new friends. Having a gym buddy will inspire you to go on those cold, rainy days when you lack motivation!

If you prefer exercising outdoors then walking or running is a good option. There are walking and running clubs up and down the country.
